Kathy & Chris – Cafe Engagement Session: Austin TX

When Kathy wrote me about her session location and her inspiration started with a list of restaurants, I was enamored. We ended on Easy Tiger for their amazing pretzels (and killer branding), but I trusted any restaurants they would’ve picked. Getting to venture back to Texas for a few days to shoot this Austin engagement session and a wedding was a perfect way to spend some down time during busy season. Admittedly, my to-do list for Austin was essentially a list of restaurants. Hopdoddy, Home Slice, Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop, The Yogurt Spot, Spiderhouse, La Barbeque just to name a few. Thank you Texas for your awesome food, your awesome people, and your gorgeous locations. <3

Lauren and Patrick’s Old Town Alexandria Engagement Session

I like modern spins on old ideas. Old houses full of modern furniture, vintage pieces mixed with new items, and retro locations juxtaposed with modern couples. Old Town Alexandria is full of vintage stores, cobblestone roads, cute shops, and brightly painted buildings. Primary colors, this couple, their dogs, and all the love they brought to this sunrise shoot make my heart feel light. I can’t get over this Old Town Alexandria engagement session.

Hilary and Brent travelled a few hours from my homestate of West Virginia to meet up for their engagement pictures. Since I have a lot of home state pride, getting to meet them and spend a sunrise shooting them after they travelled in was the very best way to start my morning and kick off the cherry blossom festivities.

If you’re not from DC, then you may not know that there’s about a week in March or April in DC where everyone flocks the parks, tree filled neighborhoods, monuments, and the Tidal Basin for photos of the cherry blossoms. If you are from DC, you’re probably enjoying the view, but crossing your fingers the tourists clear our soon. But cherry blossoms are something of magic, no matter how many people are around. For a few short weeks there are cherry blossom festivities, tours, exhibits, hotels are impossible to book, and it’s one of the busiest times a year for engagement photos. And this is exactly why:

Sterling & John’s Rooftop Engagement Session

I’m finding that living in DC has more perks than I ever anticipated. While I worked in DC all of last year, now that I’m actually living here, it has proven to be a whole other world. I’m constantly finding new places to explore, new foods to try, and, admittedly, I still end up revisiting some of my immediate favorites, which is why this session features Ben’s Chili Bowl, the location of an amazing detour from a wedding I recently posted. This walk around DC quickly became a rooftop engagement session when we got back to their building. Some sunshine, exploration, and two people, in love.

Sonia and Stefanie’s Washington DC Engagement Session

Sonia and Stefanie love art, videogames, and live in the beautiful state of Georgia. When they decided to get married, they travelled up to Washington DC for their wedding nuptials. For their engagement session, we met up at a soybean field just as the rain had cleared a few days before their wedding. We carefully stepped through spiderwebs into the field where the leaves of plants were turning bright yellow toward the end of summer and the weather was windy and warm. This is where I got to know them.

Being a wedding photographer means I get to spend a very short, but intimate time with couples. Meeting these two in person for the first time in a cafe, I knew I was going to love getting to work with them. Shooting their engagement session confirmed this, but on their wedding day, getting to see just a handful of their friends and family come together for their union; that completely sealed the deal. These two women are absolutely stunning, incredibly bright and cheery to be around, and although they had to leave their homestate of Georgia to be wed, they are married and I couldn’t be happier to have met them and been a part of it. Love is love.

New York City Lifestyle Session: Ting and Josh

Walking around New York City is always invigorating, but getting to spend two days with Ting and Joshua was a weekend made of wonder. They wanted to incorporate everything they love about their home in New York City in their session — their favorite places to walk, their amazing shiba inu pups, the city streets that have become such a huge part of their lives, the metro, and most important, the place they got married; the Apple store (seriously, I can’t get over how incredibly romantic the idea behind their wedding was after I read about it here). We were up in time for a chilly sunrise session on the Brooklyn Bridge (if you follow my blog, you know sunrise sessions are the way to my heart) and I got to hang out with two amazing folks and two adorable puppies. In case in bears repeating, I love New York.

Tara’s Lifestyle Family Session – Maplewood NJ

I really love this family session for it’s silliness, the laughing that didn’t stop the entire time we shot, the autumn weather and scarves, and because I was introduced to the amazing small town of Maplewood in New Jersey, home of a cafe I wish I had closer to my house so I could have a constant supply of the desserts and burgers, The Laurel, has to offer up.

Eve & Allen: Corcoran Art Gallery Wedding in Washington DC

Allen and Eve’s Corcoran Art Gallery Wedding in Washington DC was the perfect juxtaposition to their shoeless, warm and summery apple orchard engagement session from earlier in the spring. Their wedding was modern and sleek, starting with portraits in Georgetown and moving to their minimalistic backdrop of the Corcoran Art Gallery for their wedding ceremony and reception. I loved getting to see all of their hard work come together along with the work of the lovely planners and designers at Vintage Ivy Events who made so much of this event possible. It was amazing to spend the day with Allen and Eve surrounded by their family and friends who had travelled from all over the world to come together for their wedding and I’m excited to be sharing photos from their wedding day with you now!

Bri & Zack: Foggy Sunrise Engagement Session

One of the best things about being in DC is having access to all the rural areas that surround it. This session was in Perkasie, PA in autumn. When the sun came up, the entire sky was orange and warm and the fog stayed on the ground for a full hour after sunrise. I’ve said this before about sunrise sessions, the light is unbeatable. I loved delivering this session to Bri and Zack and hearing back within a few minutes from the groom that waking up early to drive to PA for this session was daunting, “but good lord was it worth it.” It sounds crazy to wake up early to go out and shoot, but I’m going to have agree.

Totally worth it.
