Omar and Cindy’s Key West Destination Wedding

I’d like to start this post off by saying Omar and Cindy are the coolest couple from Jersey that I know and their coming together was a union of epic proportions. Months ago, I posted our personal photos from Key West, but I’m so happy to share this wedding because it was such a huge part of what made our stay in Key West so amazing.

This destination wedding in Key West was such a fun idea for a couple with friends and family that live absolutely everywhere. They wanted to be surrounded by all of their friends and family and wanted their wedding to be a vacation for their guests as well as a wedding invitation. They even arranged for a trolly to take their guests for a tour of the island from the ceremony at Saint Mary Star of the Sea church to the reception as we went off to do bride and groom portraits. Their sunset reception was at the Westin and where we stood on the dock was surrounded by tourists during the reception because it really is the best place to go to watch the sunset. Warm summer nights make for good times. Always. The night was full of dancing, cotton candy, fresh seafood, steel drums, and lots of love. <3

Key West Sunsets and Chasing Chickens

If you know me at all, you know how much I adore Texas sunsets. You probably don’t need to hear it from me again, but honestly, good lighting makes me swoon. When the sun sets in Texas, the skies light up orange, dark blue shadows stretch across the world, and there are these few moments before sunset that contain that amazing, colorful light. Well, apparently, I desperately needed to see a sunset on the ocean.

Josh and I were in Key West last week to shoot a wedding (I cannot wait to share those photos soon!) and I’m in awe all over again with sunsets. I’m a little surprised I enjoyed myself as much as I did, really, but I legitimately love Key West now. It was half of what I expected – it’s true that there were shot glasses in every store and terrible bumper stickers and t-shirts for sale every restaurant you went to, but after we spent 2 days exploring the gorgeous scenery on bicycle, chasing chickens all over the island, and eating some of the best food I’ve had in a while, I could overlook all the bumper stickers in the world. I feel blessed that we got to spend a few extra days taking it all in and I wouldn’t mind going back after we move to the east coast next year.

Side note – if you visit Key West, I highly recommend The Cafe if you’re craving vegan food and you’re roaming Mallory Square. Also, I’m going to go ahead and say if you haven’t been to Margaritaville, you kind of have to go. It’s the quintessential tacky tourist spot and I’m so glad I went. They’ve taken it upon themselves to alter music videos to add in their own footage of middle age women drinking around the island. It’s so bad it’s good.

New York City Street Shooting

I took a trip to NYC last week to spend time with some amazing ladies (and talented photographers), Mary, Jill, Ari, and Julie. It was 2 full days of walking, photographing, and eating awesome food. Even street vendor food tasted like heaven. Just thinking about it makes me feel both exhausted and refreshed (and hungry). Most of all, it makes me miss street photography dearly.

Walking around DC taking photographs of people and food was everything to me just a few years ago. I even managed to turned it into a career when I took a job at a newspaper and 90% of my job was being on the streets, photographing the world happening, but after I left my job at the Martinsburg Journal, I quit street shooting completely. NYC was invigorating, though; walking around in the chilled air with a warm coat, I wanted to be fashion street photographer Bill Cunningham (by the way, if you get a chance, I highly recommend you watch the documentary on Bill Cunningham). So, New York City, you were absolutely inspiring. I hope to see you soon.
